Eight years ago when we were looking at schools for my oldest, we toured 3 schools and found them all to be great. One of the best ways to learn more about KC schools is to take a tour. Please consider touring your neighborhood schools as well as other schools you are interested in. Neighborhood schools do not always have prescheduled tours or open houses because they are not “schools of choice.” They serve all students within their zoned area. But it is worth the extra effort to call and set up your own tour. Research done in Kansas City indicated that in-person school visits was the most often used resource for parents to learn about schools. Do not limit yourself by assuming that your neighborhood school is not a good fit for you. It’s easy to get caught up in what we hear about the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ and ‘best’ schools, but often this is just noise. Noise that is heard and repeated, based on info from years ago, from people who may never have been inside these schools, and from our own bias. Tour schools and see for yourself. Tour schools that you haven’t heard about, or schools you might not normally consider. You might be surprised to find out that there really are a great many good schools, and more importantly, that many of these schools could be a good fit for you.
